Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be a wider selection of gluten-free products on our supermarket shelves, along comes a batch of new, improved goods to inject some extra yum-factor into our lives.
While some are improvements to old recipes, brand new products have also popped up out of nowhere with exciting regularity.
Here at Gluten Free Family we are at the coalface of this evolutionary process, and every few weeks or so, a delicious new gluten-free food parcel arrives on our doorstep, ready to be put through its paces by our grouchy panel of fussy eaters. So here’s our pick of the best. Read the rest of this entry »

Gluten-free shoppers finally have access to an iPhone app that let you scan a product barcode in the supermarket to find out if contains gluten.
The free app, dubbed GS1 GoScan, was launched a couple of week ago and is available for download from the iTunes store. The Coeliac Society was involved in the development along with a handful of other health organisations.
Once you download the GoScan app – plus a barcode reading app – you just scan the barcode with your phone during shopping. Alternatively, you can manually type in the bar code number, or do a text search based on a product description or brand – but that sounds like a lot more trouble. Read the rest of this entry »

Some of last year’s gluten-free products.
The discount supermarket Aldi is at it again, and in the next week or so you should start seeing its gluten free range back on the shelves. (For those unfamiliar with the range, Aldi annually releases a range of gluten, wheat and dairy free products under the ‘Has No’ brand, until they sell out.)
This has become a big moment on the annual gluten-free calendar because their products are not only well priced, but according to a huge portion of our readers, they are really fabulous quality too.
Last year we got our first chance to sample some of their range, and will be trying more things this year too – but as always – we’d love it if our readers could weigh in with their favourites (the sticky toffee pudding received quite a few special mentions last year – so fingers crossed it shows up again this year). Soft bread that folds instead of breaking. Surely that ranks up there with puff pastry as one of the most-missed items among the gluten free? Now I have two gluten free loaves in my fridge that do just that.
Their maker is a company called Purebred – and I reviewed their rolls in my most recent product roundup – but at the time could not afford to stretch the budget to their loaves as well.
Well the company has sent me a few to try out and I am happy to report that the bread is everything you’d want in terms of texture and taste. Read the rest of this entry »

Yes, it is that time of year again – when festive food takes a starring role in the gluten-free-food aisles of the supermarkets.
Just yesterday, while scouting Coles shelves for some Yuletide inspiration, I spotted a gorgeous little packet of gluten-free mince pies from Eskal, and sitting right next to it was a small Christmas pudding from SimplyWize.
As we’re going away for Christmas this year, I couldn’t justify splashing out on either item, so I’m hoping a reader out there who does get to try them will let me know how yummy they are.
I don’t remember Eskal’s mince pies from last year, so they’re either a new product, or they didn’t make it to my local supermarket last year. Instead, a brand called Jon-Jon dominated the turf with their Gluten Free Fruit Mince Bites. They were rather delicious so I’ll be looking out for those again this year. Read the rest of this entry »

Gluten Free Family loves to stay abreast of important breaking news and with this in mind we’d like to bring you up to speed on green banana flour, a promising new wheat flour substitute that could hit Australian shelves within a year.
Though we have yet to get our hands on this odd sounding stuff (which is basically dried ground bananas) international scientists have officially declared it yummy. Read the rest of this entry »
I feel like I just won lotto – a gluten-free bakery has opened up in my neck of the woods!
It’s Imperial in Rydalmere and it sells direct to the public from its shop-front as well as selling wholesale to cafes and restaurants – and we here at GFF want you to tell us whether you think this is part of a growing trend.
Imperial had a stand at the recent Sydney Gluten Free Expo which we attended – and as we did our rounds we noticed lots of new specialist bakeries spruiking their wares – so let us know if you have a GF bakery near you so we can list it on our site. Read the rest of this entry »

From Eskal’s stand
The sweets and treats were back out in force at this year’s gluten free expo in Sydney, but there were also a swag of new twists on traditional staples to draw in the crowds.
Old favourites like Eskal and Schar rubbed shoulders with some new suppliers, including an increasing number of gluten-free bakeries spruiking a tasty arsenal of breads, rolls and treats.
(We plan to dedicate an entire post to this soon, so we’ll say no more for now).
The most noteworthy development at the show, however, was the official launch of the new CountryLife range of bread which is stocked by the major retail chains. Read the rest of this entry »
Just a few years ago, gluten free muesli was a dried cardboard affair with a hodge-podge of odd tasting grains – some of which were so crunchy you could lose a tooth or two if you chewed with too much enthusiasm.
Oh how the times have changed! Now there is a smorgasbord of yummy brands to pick from – offering fabulous texture and taste in what is one of my favourite breakfast staples.
