Healthy Feast's legendary lemon meringue

It’s the sort of news no gluten free blogger ever wants to deliver: a favourite bakery has quietly shut up shop.

Healthy Feast, makers of arguably the best spread of gourmet gluten-free baked goods in Australia, is no more. The Leichardt-based shop front has closed its doors and there will be no more appearances at local food markets.

The bakery ran for four years on the Sydney foodie strip, Norton Street. Healthy Feast had, like many gluten free operations, a small shop front but a big presence.

Traumatised GFF readers alerted us to the closure. The word on the street is that Healthy Feast was a victim of its own success: it simply grew too fast and that’s when things came unstuck.

We hope the power-pair behind the Healthy Feast brand, Silvia Philip and Kim McGlinn, re-emerge someday soon to liven up our gluten free food shelves with their delicious fruit flans, pies, eclairs, lamingtons – and of course those unforgetable lemon meringue pies.

Thanks for this update. It is really sad to hear when a fantastic business like this one goes bust!
Ten minutes before I read this, I was dreaming about their sausage rolls (Healthy Feasts is the only one I’ve had since being diagnosed coeliac 3 years ago). So I was shocked when I read this!
I was wondering why they hadn’t been at the markets for the past few weeks, and I just thought they had moved on to a new market area. Devastating news :o (

Oh no that is so sad. I am going to miss all those yummy treats that nowhere seems to be able to master like they do =(

NO! This can’t be true. I LOVE their sausage rolls, the bread and those lemon meringue pies are to DIE for. I have been waiting for a fine Sunday morning when hubby isn’t working so I can walk to the markets at Frenchs Forest and buy one… poop. Now will go and sob my heart out in the corner.

Sad news. Let’s hope that they come back in one form or another (or at least release the recipe for those amazing lemon meringue tarts!).

They’re moving to a new Location. Don’t be sad!

Alas, it’s good to see someone else posting about this. And yes, it’s so sad! I found out by driving there on my way home from work as I regularly do to find windows papered up… There was a note on the window at one point but by the time I got there & parked to actually read it, it was gone.

I did visit once (March this year I think) when a visiting manager guy working there said they were moving the Leichhardt store to Waterloo. He was fairly certain is was going to happen at some point, but considering they closed so quietly and their website’s been taken down so rapidly… :S I’m doubtful…

It would be nice if they just show up elsewhere but!

Did anyone happen to see the note they had on the store? I could be mistaken.. But I *think* I saw a note when I drove past & saw it all papered up.

Hi Julieanne, I saw the note – it just said thanks to all their loyal customers over the last few years and unfortunately they had had to close. Like one of the other posts, I really relied on this amazing bakery – not only the fantastic savouries but also to find someone who could make GF profiteroles was amazing! I was heading there to pick up a treat when I saw the papered up window and the note. Really devastated that they have closed. I hope they might be able to re-establish at least at the markets or surely the David Jones food hall could do with their input?!

Some good news for everyone. I just visited the Hornsby market today and Sylvia of Healthy Feast was there with her gluten free stall. They are no longer called Healthy Feast, but are back up and running from new premises. They will also be at the Castle Hill markets this Saturday – 11/2/12. Happy days.

That is fab to hear – can you tell us where their new location is?

Hello – my husband and I are looking to set up our family gluten free bakery and cafe… likely in the Eastern suburbs, and most likely in Bondi.

Due to health issues, both of us have to eat gluten free, and have been rather disappointed by whats on offer out there. Healthy Feast was indeed the most amazing, but…

We have created some very scrumptious cakes, cookies, pies, savouries etc, etc. We tested them out on friends and others, without telling them it was gluten free. They all raved about how delicious and sinful the food was, and were astonished to find out it was all gluten free!

So now we are ready to take the leap and set up the shopfront and cafe. Would most people come to the Eastern Suburbs – Bondi or Potts Point – for this sort of thing? Just testing the market – any feedback is appreciated! :-)

Sounds good to me. I’ll post this up on our facebook page – you may get a few comments there

There are a few replies in from our readers – check out our facebook page:

Word on the street is they are still doing market visits and baking out of a kitchen in the northern suburbs.

Thanks
