[19/11/09] Another day, another gluten free lunchbox to prepare. The possibilities may seem endless to the uninitiated but most of these include foodstuffs that no self-respecting 7 year old would touch – or else they involve a lot of prep, not an option in my house.
Protein isn’t a problem. A leftover drumstick, sausage or some cheese and ham seems to go down okay with some fruit and/or salad veges in a kind of ploughman’s lunchbox. It’s the carbs that are proving tricky.
Sandwiches are not an option as the gluten free variety are apparently unpalatable in the playground setting. We occasionally supply corn chips or popcorn though due to their generous fat and salt content we try to keep these in the sometimes category and we have done bananas to death.
Gluten free wraps are stodgy and we have worked our way through most of the crackers on the market. Boredom seems to be the main problem here. Though the kids like Sakata rice crackers they usually boomerang back anyway, Deli Crackers likewise, Rice Rounds (sometimes too salty) and Corn Thins go in and out of favour but recently I had a win. I gave them Freelicious crackers obtained at the Gluten Free Expo and these got the big thumbs up.
Only trouble is I can’t get these in our normal shopping and they are quite pricey – I think I paid $5 for one box [ED- I have since found Freelicious crackers at Coles]. As I continue to work my way through every gluten free carb on the market, I would welcome any further lunch-box suggestions with open arms. We’d like to kick-start a section on this, but as you can see, my inspiration has deserted me.
